Learn About Beer from Boundary Bay Brewers

Anthony Stone, one of our brewers here at Boundary Bay Brewery, will be giving away some of his brewing secrets at Bellingham Technical College (BTC) this month!  These classes are open to the general public and you can register online!  Anthony got his start as a home brewer before entering the world of professional brewing at our brewery and his passion for brewing is evident.  So you’re sure to glean lots of knowledge through either his Introductory Homebrewing class and/or the Craft Beer Styles and Tasting class which will pair (mostly local) beers with food.  Here’s what Anthony had to say about his classes:

“Being a professional brewer I feel that part of my job is to educate people about beer and to help nurture the beer culture of Bellingham.  Because I’m a brewer and a beer lover, many people ask me what kind of beer they should try or which is my favorite.  And while I’m happy to share my opinions, I think it’s really all about personal taste.  Some people love hoppy beers, others prefer a beer with a stronger malt profile.  I always encourage people who have never been to Boundary Bay Brewery to try our beer sampler.  The benefit of having six beers to try simultaneously is that you can compare and contrast the aroma and flavors of the beers.  By trying several at the same time you can find what is the most satisfying to you. Which is exactly what you’ll get to do in the Into to Craft Beer Styles and Tasting class!

This summer I will be teaching my first beer tasting class at the Bellingham Technical College on Saturday, July 24th.  “Introduction to Craft Beer Styles and Tasting”  will feature ten local beers (from Boundary Bay and other local breweries) and one beer from Belgium.  The head chef Marc Eisenberg, from BTC’s culinary program is paring food with each beer. ANY MORE DETAILS ON FOOD?  WHAT IS GOAL – LEARNING TO PAIR FOOD AND BEER OR LEARNING ABOUT CRAFT BEER STYLES OR BOTH?

And for those who want to delve deeper into the world of Craft Beer, I’ll be teaching an Introductory Homebrewing class at BTC the following week.  On Saturday, July 31stI meet many people who want to start homebrewing but are intimidated to try, so this will be a hands on class aimed at beginners.  We will be doing an extract brew with the true novice in mind, and each participant will brew their first beer in small groups right there in the BTC kitchen. The class comes with a small book and class participants will get a discount on a homebrewing kit from Northcorner Brewing Supply in downtown Bellingham.

And who knows, if these classes go well, there might be more in the future!  I’m thinking more regional beer tasting in the future like beers from England or Germany and maybe an intermediate homebrewing class focused on all-grain brewing.  So if you have always wanted to make your own beer or just want to drink a few with some great food, please join me this July at the Bellingham Technical College.

Boundary Bay Brewery’s Sweet Tweet

Picture 1Twitter is a relatively new word in the world of small business, public relations and marketing.  Yet, Twitter continues to prove itself as a huge, powerful tool in strengthening brand identity and in creating a community around a business.  At Boundary Bay Brewery, we’ve leaped into social media and are enjoying finding our fans spread across the world (even when our beer doesn’t get distributed further than Idaho!)  Not only is it fun to be a local brewery, but to then also find that we have active supporters as far flung as Tokyo, Russia and Denmark makes for a very rewarding social media experience.  But, we wanted to do more with social media then just hear what people are saying about our brewery and our beer.  We want to get in touch with our fans and get them involved in our business.  That’s why we’re holding our very first Sweet Tweet next Tuesday afternoon in the Beer Garden.

Donica Burnett, of Bantam Cakes, is also our dessert chef and we’ve been very happy to unveil her new Summer Dessert Menu at Boundary Bay Brewery.  Her creations are so popular, her dessert menu actually sold completely out the first night we offered it!  But, since the menu is so new, we haven’t decided on recommended beer pairings for all the creations.  Now, Boundary Bay Brewery Twitter fans have a chance to be part of a unique opportunity…our very first Sweet Tweet! We want Twitterers to come in and sample our new desserts and help us decide which beers pair best with each of the tasty treats.  Twitterers will taste for free, but the deal is they have to tweet for their food (you know…like sing for your supper.)!  We want the Twitter universe to feel like they are tasting with us – sampling Donica’s amazing desserts and debating whether the Dry Irish Stout or the Pilsner set off the flavors of the Larabee Cake better. So, if you attend, plan on tweeting your opinions between tastings.

Boundary Bay Brew Master Dinner to Celebrate Beer Week

Celebrate Seattle Beer Week (May 7th-17th) and American Craft Beer Week (May 11th-17th) with us at a Boundary Bay Brewery Brew Masters Dinner at McCormick and Schmick’s in Bellevue Square. Join us May 13th at 6pm for five courses all expertly paired with our signature beers.  The first course consists of Pan Grilled King Salmon on toast with scallion aioli paired with our Blonde Ale.  For the 2nd course, our ESB is matched up with a warm cucumber soup with scallop and sole mouseeline.  Our Scotch Ale is the star of the 3rd course with chilled shrimp saled with cucumbers, feta and tomatoes.  The 4th course is pan seared “Jidori” chicken breast topped with parsley taragon gremolata with ramp and sausage risotto…all paired with our IPA.  And, last but not least, try our Oatmeal Stout in the 5th course with marscapone cheesecake with rhubarb glaze and chocolate covered strawberries.  All for $59.95 (tax and tip included).
