8th Annual Compete for a Cause: Cribbage Tournament

Join us on Saturday, September 13th, and help support a valuable local non-profit by participating in our 8th Annual Compete for a Cause Cribbage Tournament. All proceeds raised will go to support Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center.  A non-profit offering conflict prevention and intervention services for businesses, organizations, individuals, and families, WDRC seeks to help community members to better manage conflict as it arises, and to learn ways to minimize the possibility of it occurring.

Cribbage is one of those games that young and old, stranger and friend can play together in good spirited fun. It’s an all-inclusive way to put a positive spin on conflict-through friendly competition. We hope you will join in the fun! All ages and experience levels are welcome, though understanding of the game is important.

The Beer Garden Bar will be open for mimosas in the morning. In the afternoon, we’ll have our BBQ & Bar open for service. You are welcome to grab some BBQ when you get a chance. Early registration is strongly encouraged (and discounted!) $25 for adults // $20 for students & seniors. Day of registration is $30. Sign up online, or in person at the Boundary Bay Bar.

The tournament will begin at 11am with 10am checkin

Mike was awarded a gift certificate to Boundary Bay, a free Understanding Conflict workshop at the WDRC, entry to next year’s tournament, and his name engraved on the WDRC and Boundary Bay Brewery Winners’ Plaques for posterity. CAM-BOO-CHA

“MushroomTea” is the urban dictionary term spreading around town, but Kombucha (pronounced CAM-BOO-CHA) is it’s official title. An ancient Chinese tea made of live bacteria and yeast, Kombucha has been around more more than 2,000 years and was once even thought to be a tonic for immortality. While immortality might be in-question, it’s wide-spread health claims are numerous. Those who have jumped on the ‘Bucha’ band-wagon state that the pro-biotic helps aid in digestion, detoxifies the liver and other organs, supports the immune system, boosts metabolism and lowers cholesterol, among many other things. While official scientific reports have not yet confirmed these health benefits, the drink is quickly rising in popularity, especially here in Bellingham.

2834-KombuchaTown_MainroomFORWEBIn April 2013, Chris McCoy opened his own Kombucha Brewery, Kombucha Town, in Bellingham (suite #603 on the top floor of the Herald Building). In this city of incredibly active, health conscious people, it’s no surprise the drink has grown a substantial following.

But what’s actually in it that is so good for you?

The brew comes from millions of microorganisms (including water, tea, sugar and a fermenting culture) that work synergistically together to form of a symbiotic colony of yeast and bacteria (SCOBY). The drink is brewed (or fermented) over the course of 7-31 days. The result? A raw, fermented, probiotic and naturally carbonated tea (2% alcohol) that tastes something between sparkling cider and champagne. The end product is loaded with organic acids, active enzymes, amino acids and polyphenol anti-oxidants. (Click to learn more about these health benefits).

KombuchaTown_bottleThink you might want to give this “miracle brew” a try? Now you can, right here at Boundary Bay! We’ve partnered up with Chris McCoy from Kombucha Town up the street, and now offer their tea on tap in the Beer Garden. The tea from Kombucha Town has a refreshing and bittersweet, lemon-ginger taste. It’s recommended that if this is your first time trying Kombucha, that you consume it in moderation until you know how it reacts with your own body. While the health benefit claims are multitudinous, side-effects are possible (such as an stomach upset). Thus, its important you slowly introduce the beverage into your daily routine until your body grows accustomed to the drink.

Next time you’re at Boundary, head to the Beer Garden and look for it on tap. Try a schooner and let us know what you think!

Out of the Ashes

shapeimage_1shapeimage_11The band, Out of the Ashes, is a music therapy program that was created by local resident, Jon Dalgarn, to give people with disabilities the chance to play music. This summer, Out of the Ashes will be performing every Tuesday in the Boundary Beer Garden from 3-5pm.

The idea for Out of the Ashes grew from a job Dalgarn had in Arlington, where he worked with those with developmental disabilities in a residential and vocational setting. A professional musician, Dalgarn would pull out his guitar at lunch and start playing. “The whole energy of the place shifted,” he said. The enthusiasm increased more when he introduced instruments like a tambourine and, later, a microphone that encouraged others to sing. Instead of watching him and being entertained, They’re part of the scene. It was life-changing,” said Dalgarn, “There was a sense of belonging – its takes away the disability, and looks at his ability, stated one participant’s mother.

The combination of the two, music and human services, sparked the creation of a program that united Jon’s love for live-performance and his passion for adding quality to the lives of the people he currently serves.  Out of the Ashes is now an established, interactive music therapy program that has proven to provide a positive and profound life-changing experience on participants. Whether at a coffee house, street fair, or in their weekly groups, members and audiences alike are welcome to join in the fun by playing any of the many percussive instruments provided.

“It’s the best gig in the world,” Dalgarn said. “It’s an amazing thing to watch and see what happens!”

This live, responsive music program is enjoyed and acclaimed by everyone who attends. Out of the Ashes provides a creative expression, a deep sense of self-esteem, positive social behavior skills, vocational placement, a renewed sense of joy in living and a more well-rounded balance in one’s life.

Membership is open to people of all ages and abilities. Email or call for more information on booking or participating in the Out of the Ashes Music Therapy Program:
