A Week of Spooktacular Fun at Boundary Bay

Posted on October 26, 2009 by Boundary Bay

Here at Boundary Bay Brewery, we really don’t need much of a reason to celebrate.  We love doin’ it up right!  And that applies to Halloween too!  We’ve got lots of ways to celebrate…

On Friday, On Friday Oct. 30th (from 5:30-10pm) you can kick off the festivities a little early and get your spook on in our Haunted Beer Garden put on by the Bellingham Roller Betties.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 12 with all the proceeds from the ticket sales going to the Roller Betties and all their roller derby madness!

From 2-5pm, on Halloween (Saturday, Oct. 31st) you can bring the little ones into downtown Bellingham where you can trick or treat at various downtown businesses…including Boundary Bay Brewery.  You can get maps of participating businesses throughout the Central Business District or by contacting the Downtown Bellingham Partnership.

And last, but certainly not least, you can join us for one heck of a party on Halloween night!  Sugar Sugar Sugar, Lozen, Dog Shredder and the Pasties are going to be rockin’ the brewery and costumes are most definitely encouraged! The show starts at 10pm and it’ll cost you just $6 to get in.  But beware, our brewery is popular on night like this, so you might want to come early and have a couple pints while you wait for the show to start!

But, best of all, our kitchen has whipped up an incredible array of spooktacular desserts that are available all week (starting today!).

cauldronCauldron of Bones: a ghoulishly delicious chocolate cauldron filled with a ghostly white chocolate mousse covered by a bloody strawberry goo and topped with skeletal remains. $5

Caramel Apple Float: a caramel rimmed pint glass filled with sparkling apple cider with a float of house-made caramel ice cream…like a liquid caramel apple!  $5  p.s. (adults can enjoy this sweet treat with just a little more bite – try it with a spire hard cider. add $3)

monsterMonster Mousse: don’t be afraid if you find your dessert looking back at you since this devilishly decadent chocolate mousse has eyes plucked from the sweetest monsters we could find. $6

Butternut Squash Créme Brulee: an award winning dessert created right here in Boundary’s kitchen!  The sweetness of butternut squash marries with the classic creme brulee to make a special Harvest time dessert that won the People’s Choice Award (for dessert!) in the Bellingham Farmers Market Squash Smackdown.  $6  (click here for the recipe!)

Cabaret at Boundary Bay Brewery

Posted on July 22, 2009 by Boundary Bay

This Saturday, July 25th, our Beer Garden here at Boundary Bay Brewery is going to be packed thanks to the Bellingham Roller Betties after party!  We’ve been corporate sponsors of the Betties all season and this Saturday heralds their last bout of the season.  Once a winner is declared, all the ladies and, hopefully, all the fans will be trooping over here to the Beer Garden for a fabulous after party!  Conneticut Four and Brown’s Condition will be keeping the party rockin’ well into the night and we are very, very lucky to have the Dirty Bird Cabaret performing as well!  Who are the Dirty Birds you ask?  Here’s what The What’s Up Magazine had to say about the Dirty Bird Cabaret:

the Dirty Birds!

the Dirty Birds!

The fabulous Dirty Bird Cabaret brings a lot of hotness and glamour to this Northwest town. This eight-member burlesque dance group has been shaking their tailfeathers and raising a ruckus for over two years now in their sexy, colorful shows.  The Dirty Birds dance to songs by The Avengers, Gogol Bordello, The Detroit Cobras, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Cramps, to name just a few, and perform to several styles of music, but has an overall rock ‘n’ roll flavor. Their dances are choreographed to work as duets, trios and even up to five dancers, space permitting.  A big part of the appeal of the Dirty Bird Cabaret is their flashy costumes, including go-go boots, sassy wigs, short skirts and a whole lotta fringe. The girls tease the audience with sexuality, rather than club them with it. “You can still be classy while being sexy,” Suzy Swallow said.  In the group, the Dirty Birds make time to practice weekly, make costumes and choreography. The group has been working on new dances, to be debuted this month.  The effort the Dirty Birds put into their act rewards the audience fully in their over-the-top, exciting shows.  “I think we inspire people to loosen up and not be so scared of sexuality,” said Suzy Swallow. “We also wanna make sure everyone is having a good time, we make ’em laugh and get ’em hot under the collar. Ooh la la!”

Join us in the Beer Garden for a fun night of great music, a celebration of the Roller Betties and an incredible cabaret performance.  You won’t see another night like this coming around soon…don’t miss your chance!

Boundary Bay Brewery Supports Roller Derby!

Posted on March 9, 2009 by Boundary Bay

bettie_beer_label_finalBoundary Bay Brewery has just become a sponsor of the Bellingham Roller Betties!  We’re happy to support this great local non-profit and we’re excited to serve our Bettie Blond beer in the beer garden at each of their bouts this season.

So, what is roller derby?  Basically, it is all female, do-it-yourself, flat track racing.  According to the Today Show, it is the fastest growing sport in the United States!  The Bellingham Roller Betties are one of five new leagues forming in Washington State.  The Bellingham Roller Betties was founded in 2006 as a skater owned and operated DIY, nonprofit organization and is now over 50 women strong.

It works like this: The game, or “bout”, is played between two teams in a set of 20-minute periods. During each period there are an unlimited amount of jams (usually around nine or ten). When the pack is in formation the ref blows the whistle and the jam begins. Once the pack is on a roll, the ref blows a double whistle and the Jammers take off. The first Jammer to legally break through the pack in the initial pass is named the Lead Jammer. The jam lasts for two minutes unless the Lead Jammer calls it off for strategic reasons. The pack, Blockers and Pivots, set up offensive plays to help their own teams Jammer through the pack, and also play defense to prevent the opposing team’s Jammer from scoring. The Jammers are the only ones that can score, by lapping the pack then on subsequent laps passing the opposing Blockers and Pivot, all while staying in bounds.

It may not be the most conventional sporting activity, but it remains a positive outlet for women to spontaneously participate in athleticism and self expression.  The Roller Betties have their first bout on Saturday, March 14th at the Bellingham Sportsplex.  You don’t want to miss the season opener!  Tickets are only $5-$10 and you can purchase them online.  And for those over 21, don’t forget to check out the beer garden at the sportsplex and give Boundary Bay Brewery’s Bettie Blond beer a try.

Halloween at Boundary Bay Brewery

Posted on October 26, 2008 by Boundary Bay

Trick or Treat in Downtown Bellingham this Friday! Our doors will be open to little trick or treaters from 3-5 pm as part of the Downtown Renaissance Network event.  Bring your kids to Downtown Bellingham and visit local merchants who will be ready with treats (and maybe a trick or two!).

But what about the rest of us who are looking for a slightly more lively Halloween activities?

Lets admit it, at it’s most basic incarnation, Halloween is a holiday for kids.  Dressing up, heading door to door to sweetly beg for treats, making yourself sick on excess amounts of chocolate shaped like eyeballs.  So, what do you do when you are no longer a kid and you don’t have children of your own to re-live the old traditions with?

You come to Boundary Bay!!

Here, you can dress in your wackiest, your craziest, your funniest, your most risque.  You can show up with vampire teeth and a rainbow wig.  You can sweetly beg the bartender for just one more of your favorite Boundary Bay brew.  You can shake your thang while Black Eyes and Neckties tear up the stage with Jill Brazil and Axes of Evil.  You can even get the pants scared off you on our deck which we’ve let the Bellingham Roller Betties turn into their own Haunted Lounge!  Come celebrate Halloween at Boundary.  Feel like a kid again in the best kind of way…the way that simultaneously lets you appreciate the joys of being adult…namely, that nice cold IPA (or whatever your beer of choice is) sweating in your hand just waiting to be consumed with abandon.  Doors will open at 10 pm and a mere $6 will get you in!
