The Best of 2010

Posted on December 8, 2010 by Boundary Bay

It’s hard to believe, but another year is already drawing to a close and it’s got us in a reflective mood over here at Boundary Bay Brewery.  So, today…we’re looking back!

Cheers to our 15th Anniversary!

2010 marked our 15th anniversary and we had a fantastic party here at the brewery to celebrate!  We ranked as the largest selling brewpub in the nation for the third year running and were voted the Best Brewpub in Washington by the readers of Northwest Brewing News – also for the third year in a row.  The Northwest Brewing News Readers choice awards also named Boundary Bay Brewery for Best Scotch Ale and Best IPA…which makes our IPA the winner for the last five years consecutively!

In 2010, we brewed our first Tripel, made an anniversary ale called “15” and created a special brew to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Village Books…and all were met with rave reviews! We got a new Mash Tun and installed our very first beer engine which now lets us provide our thirsty customers with not one but TWO cask ales every day.  We brought home medals from the North American Beer Awards, the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup:  Silvers for our Dunkles Bock (WBC) and our Porter (NABA) and Bronzes for our Cabin Fever (WBC), Imperial IPA (WBC) and Imperial Oatmeal Stout (GABF).

our logo come to life in St. Paddy's Parade!

We had the pleasure of helping over 100 local nonprofits and in bringing the community together for Bellingham’s first annual St. Patrick’s Day parade (thanks to Janet, our General Manager!).  We had a Locks of Love donation party with free haircuts in our beer garden and brought together lots of local and sustainable businesses for our very first Earth Day Sustainability Fair.  We surpassed 10,000 fans on Facebook, held our first (possibly THE first ever?) Virtual Brewers Night and took back the tap as the House IPA at Beveridge Place Pub!

And, besides all that, we’ve kept on keeping on…brewing and bottling all our usuals that you’ve come to know and love, serving up fresh and local Northwest food, hosting events here at the brewery throughout the year and doing our best to help keep Bellingham a strong, local, sustainable community.  It’s been a whirlwind and we’ve had a fabulous time!  We just want to say thank you to all of our incredible fans who are such an important part of what we do.  We could never be a success without the love and support we receive from our community.  So, cheers everyone…and thank you!

Here Comes Cabin Fever Season Again

Posted on October 20, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Good old Dad used to tell me quite regularly that I wouldn’t believe how quickly time seems to speed up the older you get.  It wasn’t that I didn’t believe him…it just wasn’t relevant to me at the time.  I was busy being a kid and then a teenager when things like summer vacation or the countdown to Christmas seemed to stretch on into infinity.  But, years have passed and…like all of us…I’ve gotten older.  And suddenly, Dad’s words make a whole lot more sense than they used to.  I find it nearly impossible to believe that another year has passed again and it’s almost time to break out the Cabin Fever for another Bellingham winter.

The Boundary Bay Brewery Cabin Fever is a strong ale or “winter warmer” with a dark red-brown color and a very rich malty flavor.  We make it with Mt. Hood, Warrior and Crystal hops and balance the flavors with the following malts: Pale 2-Row, Dark Crystal, Munich, Carastan, oats and Chocolate Malt.  While this is a big beer that is deceptively strong (7.2% ABV) it tastes very smooth thank to extra long cold conditioning.  Try this beer with spicy foods or any rich, heavy dishes…perfect for the holidays!

Our Cabin Fever has developed a bit of cult following and we have customers asking for it year round here at Boundary Bay Brewery. It’s our Winter Seasonal brew, though, so we only bring it out at certain times of the year.  Lucky for you, that time is now!  Here at the brewery, Cabin Fever will officially be on tap Friday, November 5th and we’ll debut it the day before with a special Cabin Fever cask on Thursday, the 4th.  If, however, you can’t wait that long…you’ve got a couple of options.  If you feel like heading to Seattle, you can score Cabin Fever at Pouring Main Street Alehouse in Bothell and at Sully’s in Seattle on Phinney Ridge.  But, if fighting I-5 traffic doesn’t seem like a good time to you, check out our Brewers Night at Mckay’s Taphouse (aka: Pizza Pipeline on Samish Way in Bellingham) on Monday, November 1st at 5pm when we’re taking over the joint armed with kegs of Cabin Fever and lots of BBAY goodies to give away.

Winter’s coming…get your Cabin Fever now!

Whole Weeks Devoted to Beer!

Posted on April 27, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Ah May!  Spring has Sprung, we’re all feeling frisky and there are eleven whole days this month strictly devoted to celebrating all things craft beer!  Could this month get any better?!?  Seattle Beer Week kicks off May 13th and winds down May 23rd while American Craft Beer Week runs May 17th to the 23rd.  We suggest clearing your calendars now and cashing in on that vacation time you’ve got saved up at work.  This is gonna be huge!  Seattle Beer Week features all kinds of events happening at breweries, bars and bottle shops in the greater Seattle area and all the way up here to Bellingham.  Craft Beer Week, on the other hand, is a national celebration with thousands expected to participate.  The “Mother of All Beer Weeks” celebrates small and independent craft brewers and is a chance to highlight all that the U.S. loves about craft beer. In 2006, the week became the largest national effort focusing on American craft brewers and remains so today.

Here’s how we’re participating at Boundary Bay Brewery:

On Friday, May 14th, we’ll have our only event outside of our own brewery.  Collins Pub in Seattle 4-7pm is hosting Boundary Bay Night, where they’ll be “celebrating Washington’s finest microbrewery”!   They’ll have eight Boundary Bay beers on tap, including at least one cask and a special release beer or two. Not to mention schwag, food specials, and people from Boundary Bay Brewery on hand to charm you!  Collins Pub: 526 2nd Avenue, Seattle WA 98104. Phone: 206-623-1016.

Take part in Afternoon Delight at Boundary Bay Brewery on Wednesday, May 19th from  4-7 pm.  You’ll get to meet the Boundary Bay Brewers and sample vertical tastings of Cabin Fever and Old Bounder!  The beers will be paired with a selection of sweet and savory snacks.  Our Old Bounder is a rich, full-bodied barley wine.  Copper in color with a smooth caramel sweetness, warming alcohol content and balanced hop character.  Excellent with desserts or as an after dinner beverage.  The Boundary Bay Cabin Fever is a strong ale or winter warmer with dark red-brown color and avery rich malty flavor.  While this big beer is deceptively strong, it tastes very smooth thanks to extra long cold conditioning.  Try it with spicy foods, paired with rich heavy foods or all by itself!

Join us in the Beer Garden for a Highland Scotch Ale Release Party 4pm on Thursday, May 20th.  Our Highland Scotch Ale is rich and dark with a faint smokey finish.  Dark crystal and peated malts are added to achieve the elements unique to this historic seasonal.  This seasonal brew is hand made annually in commemoration of the Highland Games held in Bellingham each summer and this year we’ll be having a Highland Extravaganza in our Beer Garden to celebrate it’s arrival.  The annual Bellingham Scottish Highland Games includes competition in piping, drumming, dancing, and athletics and we’ll have competitors here to show you what they do!  Come enjoy BBQ while watching the Highland Games athletes, pipers and dancers!  We’ll have a special cask of this beer on hand for the party and the Highland Scotch Ale will be available on tap at the bar Friday, May 21st.

Join us in the Boundary Bay Brewery beer garden for a Locks of Love party!  The fun begins at noon on Saturday, May 22nd when two of our brewers are getting sheared and donating their hair to Locks of Love to help support the American Cancer Society.  We’re hoping other brewers from the greater Seattle area will join in…not to mention any of our usual customers who have 10 inches of hair to cut off and donate!  Stylists from Honey Salon and Bellisima Salon will be set up in the Beer Garden to cut anyone’s hair who’d like to donate to Locks of Love and we’ll even have representatives here from St. Joseph’s Cancer Center to provide support, answer questions and raise awareness.  BBQ and beer too, of course!

Cheer on Local Olympian at Boundary Bay Brewery!

Posted on February 25, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Last Sunday, our Tap Room here at Boundary Bay Brewery was packed with Olympic Hockey fans watching USA and Sweden battle it out.  As one of our fans on Twitter put it  “Celebrating USA victory at Boundary Bay Brewery in B-ham. Fans intermittently chanting “USA” and “IPA.” ” We created such a ruckus, CTV themselves were considering heading down to check out the action as we televised their Olympic coverage.

If you missed out that night, don’t worry!  We have another chance to cheer on America’s Olympic Hockey Team.

Today (Thursday, Feb. 25th) at 3:30 pm PST the Canadian and American Women’s Hockey Teams fight it out for the Gold Medal. We’ll be televising CTV coverage of the event in our Tap Room so come join us for Happy Hour (4-6pm) with sweet deals on pints and munchies.

Best of all, we’ll be cheering on Karen Thatcher, a Blaine local on the American Hockey Team!  Come root for the home team and show your local pride!!

And as always, Thursdays are our Cask Night during Happy Hour.  Each week we feature a different style of cask ale for your tasting pleasure. The Hockey game starts at 3:30 and our Happy Hour starts at 4 pm, so come early and plan to unwind with a couple of pints of our cask ale and super satisfying munchies like Kobe sliders, Bison sliders and tacos.

Live Music, The Red Cross and Beer

Posted on February 18, 2010 by Boundary Bay

This week, we’ve been raising money to donate to the American Red Cross.  It’s our Have A Heart 4 Haiti fundraiser at Boundary Bay Brewery.  We came up with lots of ways to create opportunities for our patrons to donate – from a special dessert to donating $1 per pint for every Heart 4 Haiti beer sold during Happy Hour.  Our servers donating a portion of thier tips from Valentine’s Day and we, as the brewery, matched their donations.  So far, we’ve raised over $1,500 to donate to the Red Cross for their Haiti Relief efforts.  And, the week’s not over yet!

Tonight, (Thursday, Feb. 18th) during our Happy Hour, we’ll be serving a special cask of ESB .  And we will donate $1 from each pint of that cask ale we sell tonight from 4-6pm.  Come in and have a pint or two to celebrate Friday’s imminent return and donate to a very good cause at the same time!  Our special Heart 4 Haiti dessert – a white chocolate cream puff – is available all week too and we are donating 100% of the profits from each dessert sold.

Our fundraising week will end with a live show in our tap room on Friday night, Feb. 19th.  PanPan and Talkdemonic will be gracing our Tap Room at 10:30 pm and 100% of the $4 cover will be donated to the Red Cross.  Marinda Peugh, a representative for the Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross, will be here at Boundary Bay Brewery that night to talk for a few minutes about what they are doing in Haiti and what they do here locally.

Check out the One Month Report from the Red Cross that outlines the relief efforts in Haiti to date.  See how YOU can help!  Come Have A Heart 4 Haiti at Boundary Bay Brewery!

Plan on Drinking LOTS of Beer Next Week

Posted on January 7, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Alright folks, clear your calendars for next Wednesday, Thursday (…and maybe Friday too, if you’re smart!).  Plan on being here at Boundary Bay Brewery for another big beer week!

On Wednesday January 13th, we’ll be debuting our brand new Tripel.

We’ve brewed it to enter into the Belgianfest on January 23rd…put on by The Washington Beer Commission.  The Belgianfest will feature various Belgian style beer by over 20 Washington breweries to put a spotlight on the fascinating beer culture of Belgium.  Our Belgian Style Tripel is a strong, pale golden, medium bodied ale with 9.3% ABV.  It is midly spicy with a medium hop bitterness.  The aroma is of fruit, Belgian Abbey Yeast and alcohol.  It is a complex beer with a warming alcohol flavor and a long dry finish.  It was made with Pilsner, Vienna, Special B and Belgian aromatic malts.  Then, we rounded it out with Tettnang and Saaz hops, Belgian Candi sugar and Abbey Ale yeast, which is a Belgian Ale yeast with a very high alcohol tolerance traditionally used to make trappist style beers.

Then, on Thursday January 14th, we’re serving up a CASK of Imperial Porter for you!

Last year, our brewers turned out a batch of Imperial Porter to celebrate our 2,900th batch of beer.  It turned out to be such a hit, they’ve brought it back this winter too!  Historically, porter is a dark-coloured style of beer that is generally brewed with dark malts, but many breweries now brew porters in a wide variety of flavors like pumpkin, honey, vanilla, and bourbon.  We decided to keep things closer to the traditional style by using Pale, Crystal, Munich and Carastan malts with Simcoe and Tradition hops.  This is a big beer at 9.2% abv, but it is a sweet and well-balanced porter.  Aaron Jacob Smith, our head brewer, described this commemorative brew as “…deceivingly strong, yet silky smooth and black.”

Got Cabin Fever?

Posted on November 2, 2009 by Boundary Bay

October is already over and cold weather seems to be upon us.  But don’t despair!  Our Cabin Fever will officially be on tap Friday, November 6th. This winter warmer has a dark red-brown color and a rich malty flavor that will complement your favorite spicy dish or any rich, hardy meal.

Specially brewed and bottled for the Pacific Northwest winters, this beer has been cold conditioned for a smooth, dry-hopped flavor.  Made with Mt. Hood, Warrior and Crystal hops, this big beer has a 7.2% alcohol level and is deceptively strong!  Just the thing to ward off the dark nights and cold weather. Our Cabin Fever has won a number of medals including a silver medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup (also won a bronze medal at the 2006 WBC!), the gold medal at the 2004 NABA, a bronze medal at the 2002 GABF, and a silver medal at the 1999 GABF.

feverinsnowtrees_smallHurry down to the brewery on November 6th to grab yourself a pint of the long-awaited Cabin Fever.  Try it with our Mac and Cheese (everyone’s favorite!), our Hummus plate or one of Ralf’s soft pretzels if you’re looking for something a little lighter!

And, if you just can’t wait for the OFFICIAL release, join us for our Thursday Cask Night Happy Hour on November 5th.  We’ll be tapping the very first keg of our Cabin Fever for a little pre-release party!  Cheers.

Luckily, for those who don’t have the luxury of hanging out at the brewery as much as some of us, Cabin Fever will be available in 22 oz. bottles on Wednesday, November 25th!
