Celebrating Women in Whatcom County

Posted on December 1, 2011 by Boundary Bay

Looking for a great local gift that will make YOU feel good too?  Check out the HER Calendar that celebrates Whatcom County women that were nominated by the community AND benefits 12 local nonprofits!  Last May, fifthonsixth – a local marketing agency – asked their Facebook community who the most beautiful and successful women in Whatcom County were.

They stressed that they were looking for women who were beautiful and successful inside and out.  The response they got was overwhelming!  Out of hundreds of answers, over 30 women were chosen to be featured in the calendar’s professional and classy black and white photos…including our very own Janet Lightner!

The calendars can be purchased online or at the various locations across Whatcom County including The Greenhouse, Old World Deli, the Pickford, Village Books and here at Boundary Bay Brewery.  HER calendars retail for $20 each (plus tax) and the proceeds of the sales will support local charities like the Whatcom Humane Society, the Bellingham Food Bank, Whatcom Land Trust, Make Shift and the Pickford Film Center.

Come join us for a day of music, a BBQ, hoola hooping, pet products by local crafters for sale and delicious brews out in our beer garden here at Boundary Bay Brewery to support the Whatcom Humane Society (WHS).

All proceeds from the door, and one dollar from every BBQ meal sold will be donated to WHS.  The garden will open at noon and is all ages until 10:00 pm.

Enjoy live music throughout the day by DJ Kitchensink , The Heligoats , Cherry Blossum Family Delivery , Levi Ware  , The R.L. Heyer Trio  and The Eternal Fair.

Donations are appreciated during the day.  $10 Cover starting at 6:00 pm. $8 presale tickets are available at Avalon Music on Railroad Avenue, and at Tails a Wagging!

For over 100 years the Whatcom Humane Society has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community. The Whatcom Humane Society (WHS) has been caring for animals throughout Whatcom County since 1902.

As the oldest non-profit animal welfare organization in Whatcom County, WHS is committed to caring for any animal in need. As an open-admission shelter (no animal is turned away regardless of his/her age, temperament or medical condition), the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Whatcom Humane Society cared for over 4,800 homeless, unwanted and abused animals in 2009 alone.

And The Whatcom Humane Society cannot provide for the animals in our community without the continued support of people just like you!  So join us for this Raise the Woof event or support the WHS through a yearly membership, a donation or by volunteering your time.

Hometown Baseball and Local Beer!

Posted on July 22, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Boundary’s own Graphic Designer, Tammy Findlay went to the Bellingham Bells game last Tuesday.  She’s still talking about how much fun she had that evening and making plans for hitting up some more games this week.  Check out why she loved it so much:

Okay, let’s just start by saying I’m not really that knowledgeable about baseball. American Football is my first love. So I could pretend to give you a run down of the Bell’s win on Tuesday by piecing together what other talented baseball writers had to say, but I have a feeling I’d muck it up. Here’s my version. The Bell’s played an awesome game! They totally rocked the field. There were great hits, lots of steals, double plays, heads up snags, strikeouts and lots of high fives. We all had plenty to cheer for.

And… we had great beer! Boundary Bay Brewery is now an official sponsor of the Bellingham Bells.

Honestly I didn’t think I was in the mood for a beer yet, because of, umm, last night had hit me a little hard. But when my friend exclaimed, “Wow! This beer is really freakin good right now!”, I had to have a sip. Now I think Boundary Bay beer is good on any day, but something was elevating the taste–a magical mix of the perfect beer temperature, sunny weather, good company, and a baseball team that was really kicking some (pick your exploitive). I was on board. And only $2 a beer. That is a deal impossible to pass up.

Actually, the whole Bells package is a great deal. On two dollar Tuesdays, admission and Boundary Beers are only $2. Concessions are at reasonable prices as well. You can bring your whole family and still be able to put gas in the car for the way back home. Even on a regular admission day, tickets are only $6.

On second thought, save that gas money. Tonight is Bike to the Ballpark. Come see the Bells take on Wenatchee at 6:30pm. Check out the Smart Trips website to plan your bike route. They’ve got a great map of bike friendly routes and trails.

The lineup of Bells games this week continues with Haggen $1 Family Feast Night on Friday, July 23rd at 6:30 p.m. All concessions are only $1 each! And bring your canine companion because it is also Bark in the Park night with the additional $1 admission proceeds benefitting the Whatcom Humane Society. Dogs will be allowed on the grassy lawn area on the East side of the field. I really wish every night was Bark in the Park night, because I brought my dog on Tuesday and they wouldn’t let me bring her in. Thank you to the door person for helping me keep an eye on her. Dear city, if you are listening, I’ll gladly pay the extra $1 to get my dog in any night. She’s not very adept at dodging fly balls.

And if you couldn’t make it Thursday or Friday, there is still Saturday’s game vs. Wenatchee @ 6:30 p.m. It’s Hometown Heroes Night presented by U.S. Customs and Border Protection

If you want to feel good about baseball again, (no offense, Mariners), come see the Bellingham Bells.

Even the Animals Love Boundary Bay Brewery!

Posted on May 12, 2010 by Boundary Bay

Michael and the infamous Iggy!

Michael Nichols, an employee of Boundary Bay Brewery for the last three years was honored along with Boundary Bay Brewery at the Whatcom Humane Society (WHS) Woof and Whiskers Awards held Sunday, May 2nd.  The awards were designed to honor the unique individuals who have made outstanding efforts towards the care, safety, and happiness of animals and others in our community.

Nichols, who handles Boundary Bay beer sales for Western Washington outside of Whatcom and Skagit counties, was already a volunteer for  WHS and NOAH in his spare time.  He noticed that animals frequently  needed to be transported between shelters and that it often took a  full day’s worth of time for shelter employees (volunteers?).  He  came  up with  the idea to use the Boundary Bay Brewery delivery vans to  transport animals for these organizations since the vans were going  that way anyway.

Nichols pitched the idea to the Owner, General Manager and Operations Manager of Boundary Bay Brewery and had answers prepared for questions he imagined they might ask.  “I thought they would  worry about the  impact on my work, and want to know about gas costs  and liability, and  all  the stuff one might expect from a business”  says Nichols.  “They  didn’t ask any questions, though, or express  any concern about how it  might have a negative impact on my work.   They all three just said  ‘Yes, do it, help the animals.’”

All in all, Nichols estimates that he’s transported around 55  animals including cats, dogs, rabbits and turtles.  He’s taken  animals to (and occasionally from) Northwest Organization for Animal Help  (NOAH),  Seattle Animal Shelter, King County Animal  Shelter, Lynwood PAWS,  Everett Animal Shelter, Seattle Persian Cat Rescue, Washington Turtle and Tortoise Rescue, Washington Shar-Pei  Rescue and the Thurston County Animal Shelter.

Boundary Bay Brewery and Michael Nichols are happy to help these animals and shelters in need.  There are many, many ways you can contribute too…contact any of the above shelters for more info.  Cheers!

Beer Ornaments On My Christmas Tree!

Posted on December 17, 2009 by Boundary Bay

Here at Boundary Bay Brewery, we love supporting small local businesses.  It’s just fun for us to help keep this community strong and healthy…and to get to know our neighbors really, really well!  This Christmas, we’re very lucky to be selling glass ornaments made specifically for us by another Bellingham company: Glassworks Northwest.  You can pick up pint glass ornaments ($10 ea.)in a variety of beer shades…ranging from a nice light blonde to a deep, dark stout color.  Or, if you prefer your beer in bigger batches, grab one of the growler ornaments ($14 ea.) labeled with our various beers.  This fun ornament would make a great gift for any beer lover…or fan of Boundary Bay Brewery!  And, it’s locally made which, in our opinion, makes it even better!  The owner of Glassworks Northwest has loved glass for many years and makes lots of great ornaments, garden art and jewelry.  Go check out her Etsy shop…and when you purchase any of her products, a portion of that sale will be donated to the local Humane Society and no-kill shelters that help animals in need.  So, really, this is a total win-win situation…you can come here to your local craft brewery, purchase an ornament made by another Bellingham company, AND help animals in need by purchasing Glassworks Northwest art.  What better time than the holidays to spread that kind of love?!

Boundary Bay Brewery Contributes to Mt. Baker Ride

Posted on May 25, 2009 by Boundary Bay

On Sunday, May 17th, VW enthusiasts got together  for the 2nd Annual Mount Baker Cruise.  As part of their outing they asked local businesses, including Boundary Bay Brewery, to donate items for their raffle to raise money for the Whatcom Humane Society.  We were happy to donate some of our merchandise and as were Hardware Sales, Roger Jobs, SK Motorsport, INCO, and H&R Motorsport.  And thanks to these donations, the group was able to raise about $450 to donate to the Whatcom Humane Society.  Check out who won our gear below!
