Winter Solstice & Some Cedar Dust

Join us for our 1st Winter Solstice Party & Craft Fair in the Beer Garden on Saturday, December 21st. We’re kicking things off the right way…at 4pm, we’ll tap the first brew in our new Galbraith Mountain Series; Cedar Dust IPA. Named after the Galbraith Mt. Trails, located between Bellingham and Sudden Valley, the series intends to capture a taste of the great outdoors and the adventurous spirit of the PNW.  Be one of the first to try it!

Santa and Mrs. Claus are going to be here too! They told us they’re riding in on a horse and buggy to give the reindeer some rest before the big night. They offered to take anyone who would like, on carriage rides around town. It’ll be free, so bring the kids on down and let them have a little chit chat with Santa. Figure out who’s been naughty, and who’s been nice :  )

We’ve also invited several local artists to set up booths in the garden to sell their hand-made creations. We’ll have items like wine-racks, pottery, jewelry, ornaments, scarves…It’s the perfect opportunity to get a little bit of holiday shopping done!

As always, we’ll provide the refreshments. There will be complementary hot cider, cookies and candy canes plus beer available for purchase. Deigo’s Taco Truck will also be joining us.

[Beer Garden] Wonderland

It’s true, Boundary Bay is hosting Bellingham’s 1st Beer Garden Christmas Tree Lot! We’re aiming to revolutionize this annual holiday occasion…so bring the whole family down and hunt for a tree, while you enjoy a brew! We’ll have a range of Fullner Farm trees available for purchase; from small Charlie Brown’s to large 7ft firs, along with wreathes made by Mt. Baker High School.

Join us on the last day of the tree sale (12/21) for the Winter Solstice Party and Craft Fair! We’ve invited several local artists to set up booths in the garden and sell their hand-made creations. It’s the perfect opportunity to get a little bit of holiday shopping done ; )

Shhh we even heard a rumor Santa was going to be dropping in between 5pm and 7pm so we hope you’ve been good this year! Stay tuned online through our Facebook for event info!

Celebrate the Solstice With Us

We love that Boundary Bay Brewery is a place that people come to celebrate their lives: their weddings, their birthdays, and their holidays.  Not only can you spend Christmas Eve and New Years Eve with us, but you can celebrate the Winter Solstice with us too!

Join us on Tuesday evening, December 21st at 8pm for a Solstice Celebration with Lydia McCauly and Grammy award-winning composer Nancy Rumbel.  Come warm up with a pint of Cabin Fever, our Winter Ale and enjoy FREE Celtic, Medievel and Appalachian songs in our Tap Room (which means no minors, sorry!).

Nancy Rumbel is a professional composer, recording artist,performer and teacher. Her primary instruments are oboe, English horn, double wooden ocarinas, clay ocarinas and keyboards. She is well known for her work for the past 25 years with the GRAMMY award-winning duo Tingstad & Rumbel.  Lydia McCauley’s music is a combination of contemporary sounds mixed with an older tradition that is categorized as New Age or Folk.

At our Solstice Celebration here at there brewery there will be holiday merriment and incredible music from medieval Spain, France, Scotland and England!  Lift your spirits and join in the fun with vocals, keyboard, oboe, English horn, ocarinas, viola, percussion and harmonium.  Please also bring a food donation for the Southside Food Bank and help feed our community during the Holidays!  Non perishable food requested, such as canned meats (tuna etc…) canned fruit, vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce. Monetary donations accepted.

 

 

 

Big Winter Beer Descriptions

Today is the Winter Solstice…the shortest day of the year, the darkest day of the year and the official first day of winter.  Our brewers used that as their excuse to load the taps here at Boundary Bay Brewery today with three of our biggest beers perfect for these winter days.  You already know what we have to say about our beers.  Today, for a little change, I thought I’d let some others tell you what they think of our beers.

Thoughts on our Imperial Porter from Seattle Beer News:

“ I sat at the bar and enjoyed a schooner of their new limited edition Imperial Porter (check out that link for their blog, by the way). This was one big porter, weighing in at 9.2% ABV. It was full of roast, chocolate & a little licorice. Brings lots of taste, but it’s a smooth drinker that is a perfect finish for an evening (not so perfect for a noon beer on a Saturday). Sounds like this one is available at the brewery only, so head on up if you want to get a taste.”  (see the whole article on Bellingham beer here!)

John Michaelson reviews our Old Bounder on Beer Advocate:

“This has always been a favorite barleywine of mine. Was very happy to see it on tap at the brewpub a while back.  The beer pours a coffee color brown color with good head retention and lacing. As expected, the beer is very sweet and malty on the nose, but with hints of underlying citrus from the hops. The flavors on the palate replicate the nose, but that sweetness is backed up with some firm hoppiness. The beer is quite rich with flavors of vanilla, butterscotch, coffee and cherry. The mouthfeel is quite plush, and the beer has a long, smooth finish. The beer is pretty drinkable, but with some noticeable warming from the abv.”

Our Cabin Fever gets talked about on atattoedtale’s Blog

“A little bit darker than most of your winter warmers. Leaves a nice latte colored head.  Interesting nose. Definitely malty with a lot of caramel and chocolate, but also reminds me of their IPA, with a hoppy, piney scent. I also get some nice spices, and molasses, and a hint of vanilla. A slightly sweet nose.  This is quite thick, but has a nice little carbonation bite. Good mouthfeel, I usually don’t care all that much about it, but I’m impressed with this.  Nice maltyness up front with a ton of caramel and chocolate. Lots of chocolate on the midpalate with a little bit of hop presence and some sweetness. The back end is my main complaint. It’s a little bit off balanced, and just a tiny bit hot, which it probably shouldn’t be at 7%.  Pretty solid brew here, and if you are in the mood for a winter warmer, this is one of the better one’s I’ve had.”

Solstice Sunday at Boundary Bay Brewery

With all the talk of Christmas, sometimes the early holiday of Solstice gets lost in the shuffle.  Both ancient and modern cultures celebrated the winter solstice which marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year.  Understandably, the event is as varied as the many, many cultures which celebrate this holiday.  A common theme, however, is rebirth…and usually festivals, gatherings, and celebrations mark the festivities.  This winter, Boundary Bay Brewery will celebrate the solstice by inviting Jan Peters and Robert Sarazin Blake to soothe our spirits by singing solstice songs in our taproom.  They will provide the lullabies for this longest night of the year and, lucky for all of us, there will be no cover for this solstice celebration!  Come down to the brewery and warm up with a Cabin Fever of an Imperial IPA.  Maybe indulge in some homey comforts like Beer Beef Stew or gooey Mac and Cheese made with Fontina, Monterey Jack, Cheddar AND Parmesan!  Spend the solstice in your neighborhood brewery ushering the longest night of the year with good food, great beer, and incredible music from two of Bellingham’s most loved musicians.
